Frances Tiafoe is set to go up against Marin Cilic again this year in team competition, but rather than the exhibition setting of Laver Cup, its the Davis Cup Semifinal match versus Croatia.
As in the Laver Cup when subbing for Juan Martín del Potro, Frances is now playing the role of singles “substitute” by filling a huge gap in the absence of John Isner who has been red hot with a solid US Open quarterfinal run after picking up the Miami Open title in April. This severely understaffed US team is attempting to take on Marin Cilic and Borna Coric away from home in front of a rowdy Croatian crowd.
Frances loves the spotlight and he can draw on that after being defeated 7-6, 7-6 by Marin in their last team play encounter. In order to stand a chance Frances must be able to move well to run down Marin’s powerful forehand and controlling serve. The slower court should help Frances stay in points, but his ground game has to hold up over the course of the match in order to be effective.
Regardless of outcome, Frances is having the time of his life and is amazed by the scenic Zadar coastline, but he’ll have to be fully prepared to save face against Marin on Friday and then recover Saturday to battle a fearless Borna on a slow red clay surface who is also making big waves on the tour.
The free flowing personality of Frances makes for a fun match as he debuts his athletic skill set as a front-runner in singles for the American team lead by the overachieving Steve Johnson.
When asked about team play, his selection into Davis Cup, Tiafoe stated, “I’m extremely satisfied about it. I’m happy to be on the team, happy to get the opportunity and to be with a great group of guys. I’m just ready to go and to have a good week.”
